Moving house is a daunting task, but using these handy hacks can make it a little less stressful and get you into your new home in record time.

Catergorise Your Boxes With Colours

Make things simpler for your movers or friends by color coding your furniture, boxes and the rooms in your new place. Buy a ream of colored paper and allocate a colour to each room in your new home. Attach a sheet of the relevant coloured paper to the door of each room (eg. bathroom = blue). Now take any furniture or boxes that will go in that room and attach the same coloured paper to top and sides of the items. Now your movers won’t need to ask where they should put the item, they will simply need to match the colour to the door.

This hack is awesome because it means you can reuse the boxes next time you move, simply remove the paper labels and start again!

You can also assign a high priority colour for boxes you will need right away, these boxes can be left at the front of rooms or in the living room so they don’t get buried and are easy to access.

Enlist Professional Help

Moving house is a lengthy and laborious process, especially if you’re moving a lot of heavy or bulky goods. To prevent personal injury or property damage, hire a removalist company to assist you. Heavy-duty removalists have all the equipment needed to lift hefty objects and can transport a lot in one trip. This helps make moving day safe and straightforward.

Keep Important Items Aside

It’s all too easy to misplace or bury things for lengthy periods of time when you’re moving. Before you start packing, take any important items you use often like medications or prescriptions and important documents and stow them in a sealed container in your vehicle. It is also a good idea to add a medical kit to this box in case of an injury.

“You can hire a small trailer that attaches to your car if your vehicle is smaller, this will allow you to separate any essential items from the others making it easier to find them” says Cargo Trailer who provide travel storage solutions.

Put Together a Box For Your First Night

There’s nothing worse than getting settled into a new house only to realise your basic essentials are buried under a million boxes. To avoid being left without things you use everyday, put together a box for each member of your family with clothes, toiletries, snacks, chargers, bedding, and anything else you’ll need for the first few nights in your new home.

Add Descriptive Labels to Your Boxes

Colour-coding your boxes will make it easier on moving day but labeling will make unpacking a breeze! We can’t unpack everything in a single day, so include in-depth descriptions on the boxes with their contents to help you choose which ones to open first. Make it specific by writing things like “towels, soap dispenser, bath toys” instead of “bathroom stuff”.

Also ensure you label any boxes with breakables as FRAGILE. Anything delicate should be wrapped in protective material like blankets or bubble wrap and then placed in a box labelled FRAGILE on every face so it is also visible. You should also add signs onto fragile furniture so movers know to be extra careful.

Declutter

Moving house means taking everything with you, including furniture, making it the ideal moment to get rid of things that no longer serve a purpose. Before you move, cull your belongings to make packing and unpacking quicker and less expensive.

Work Smarter, Not Harder

Making moving as simple as possible is the aim of the game. Instead of taking everything out of dresser drawers simply wrap cling film and tape around dressers and leave the things inside. Now the drawers will be ready to use as soon as you arrive at your new home. Just let your movers know so they can be careful with it and know how heavy it will be when they lift it.

For hanging clothes, try placing a garbage bag around a group of the clothes and leave the hangers hanging out. Tightly wrap tape around the base of the hanger hooks. Now all you need to do is hang the bundle up in your new closet and remove the bag. Instantly unpacked!

“These simple steps will also help to protect your clothes from damage, creasing and staining which is an added benefit” says upholstery cleaning company Blue Gum Home Services.

Get Your Home Move in Ready Ahead of Time

When you discover that the electricity or internet hasn’t been switched on, the thrill of moving into a new home may be quickly dampened. Cold showers, no air-con, and screaming children wanting WiFi will make moving in impossible.

If at all possible, call the firm a few days ahead of time so that your property can be ready for you as soon as you move in.

“If you call your telco and request and arrange for a relocation before moving day, you will likely be able to disconnect the old service and reconnect the new service the same day” says Telco provider TelcoWorks.
